about

🌺🌿This song is alive with garden metaphors.🌱🌻 Joyful and centering, I wrote this song years ago, actually, after working—and gettin some serious healing—in a community garden in the wake of one of the most harrowing periods of my life. The source of the word “harrow” is Old Norse herfi, obscurely related to Dutch hark ‘rake.’ “Lean your troubles like a rake at the gate” is the song’s refrain. Love, S

lyrics

Garden by Shawna Floyd

I got a little patch of dirt
I call it my garden
Tain't much, but it's got worth
I call it my garden
It’s all I got on this here earth
I call it my garden

Lean your troubles
Like a rake
At the gate

I'm on my knees to weed and plant
Down in my garden
Amongst the pill bugs, worms and ants
Down in my garden
I'm lowly and I'm grand
Down in my garden

Lean your troubles
Like a rake
At the gate

Chew the fruit, spit out the pits
Says the garden
You plant kale, that's what you’ll get
Listen to the garden
Life's gonna give you shit
So fertilize your garden

Lean your troubles
Like a rake
At the gate

The sweet of the soil
Let it gratify you
The sweat of the toil
Let's you know your name
The stick of the mud
Let it anoint you
Diggin what you've dug
Let that be your aim
Let that be your aim

Come stir this soil with your hands
Down in my garden
Let’s move each other once again
Down in my garden
Where do I end and you begin
Down in my garden

Lean your troubles
Like a rake
At the gate

And at the end of my life
I'll return to the garden
From flesh to dirt, death to life
Down in the garden
Daisies growing high
I am the garden

I'll lean my troubles
Like a rake
At the gate
